A Hand Clapping Classic from The Meters

The Meters “Hand Clapping Song” (Josie, 1970)

Today’s 45 is about as bananas as they get!  I assumed every dang person in the world, at some point, had a person close to them sit them down and say “YOU MUST HEAR THIS.”  They had their minds blown, tried to listen to every Meters record ever then began forming into the fully functional adult, tween or child they are today.  Yet, I DJ a soul night every week and this song makes its way onto the turntable probably once a month and inevitably I get a few people coming up to me saying “WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THIS?!”

After this happening four or five times I realized I should put this up here in case there are others who have yet to have their grey matter rearranged by The Meters.

I hope this isn’t the first time you’re hearing the name The Meters, but if it is, you have a long and mind-blowing night ahead of you catching up to the work of New Orleans heavyweights Art Neville on keys/vocals, bassist George Porter Jr., guitarist Leo Nocentelli and the unmatched drumming of Zigaboo Modeliste.  If their work as The Meters is not staggering enough, their credits  as studio musicians for the likes of Allen Toussaint (they were the house band for his Sansu records which you can see on today’s label), Lee Dorsey, Dr. John and many more is sure to blow your top.

Hope you enjoy today’s 45, it’s a sure fire classic and dancefloor filler that gets people more than just clapping!

See you next time,

-George / Snack Attack
