Funky Political Anthem From Bill Moss

Bill Moss “Sock It To ‘Em Soul Brother” (Amy, 1969)

For many Bill Moss is no secret, Numero did a rather substantial retrospective of his work with the Capsoul Label highlighting the many artists he helped commit to wax.  But, for those who have yet to have the good fortune of hearing the products of Mr. Moss and his label, we’ve got a treat for you!

Bill Moss was a DJ at the Columbus, OH station WVOK throughout the 60s and 70s

Today’s 45 is one of the few he penned and released under his name – don’t get me started on the magnificent track “Number One”- and if there’s only one record to leave behind that your legacy will rest on, Bill Moss can rest comfortably with this one.

A definite product of a radicalized soul music environment ‘Sock It To Em Soul Brother’ is essentially a roll call of all the major social and political figures of the time and a call to use their example as a means of self empowerment.  Moss’s pleas were clearly not hollow.  Along with working to highlight his local music community through his Capsoul label (before it was shuttered by a weak willed bank) he also was an owner and operator a barbeque restaurant with his wife and had a rather interesting and distinguished political career serving a number of local positions.

Not only did he create great music he filed a lawsuit to have the ‘election’ of George W. Bush by the Supreme Court overturned.  Quite a resume!  Moss was active in politics until he passed at the age of 70 in 2005.

I hope you enjoy this slab of politically inspired funk/soul on this Saturday night.

Till next time,
