Happy to be back today with another podcast for you all! This is an upbeat hour of rockin, rollin, fuzzy and rowdy 45s. As you can see by the years below this podcast tends toward the early side of the 60s with a lot of these 45s skirting a line of R&B, Rockabilly and Garage. As I was putting this mix together I thought opening with New Orleans legend Jessie Hill’s Scoop Scoobie Doobie would set the tone. It’ s a wild but really engaging 45 that calls the audience into the song and just exudes party vibes.

Van Morrison’s b-side, 45 only track Chick-A-Boom from early in his career is an absolute favorite of mine. The energy of the record is kind of wide-eyed and a little bonkers but I absolutely love it. I’ve tried so many times to make that record work while dj’ing for crowds and I’m sad to say it always FLOPS. I’ll probably try again because I love it so much but I think it’s maybe too scary for a fun night out.

The Lewis Reed track is probably obviously Lou Reed at the very beginning of his career in NYC. Norton reissued some of these unissued demo recordings from the late 50’s and early 60’s and they’re, as expected, great! He even had some serious studio talent – Dave “Baby” Cortez and King Curtis on the sessions, definitely worth checking out.

Article on Baltimore’s dance crazes and their love for Bunker Hill! Billboard Magazine, August, 1962

Bunker Hill’s classic Hide and Go Seek also gets a spot, a favorite 45 of mine, it kind of skirts the line between a novelty record, a dance fad record and remains incredibly fun. I was really pumped to find this early Billboard article basically confirming my feelings about it and unlike Chick-A-Boom, this record still works at DJ night!

I hope you enjoy this mix as much as I did and we’ll see you next time!

Peace,
-George / Snack Attack
