A Couple Saucy & Suggestive 45s

The Blenders “Don’t Fuck Around With Love” (X-Rated, 1972)

The Bangers “Baby Let Me Bang Your Box” (R&B, 1965)

Hey Everyone! Happy to be back with another couple of eyebrow raising 45s for you. Today I’ve got a couple of tracks on the suggestive side. The first is by the unknown novelty act “The Bangers” who reimagine the dirty blues song of the same name but remove the pretense of the song being about a piano and situate it squarely in the context of a guy talking to a girl at a party.

The song is a rollicking number on its own is actually a nice upbeat R&B number but the added risque lyrics make it more than just another record. The song was covered by Doug Clark and The Hot Nuts the following year moving it out of the novelty / comedy R&B world and into…I guess just the better known R&B / novelty world.

Our second record today is a bit of a curiosity. The Blenders (not the Chicago group who has been featured here) were a doo wop group from New York City mostly active in the 50’s. During this time they cut the side “Don’t Play Around With Love” for Jay-Dee and the label owner Joe Davis had them record a version- the F bomb version you hear today- as a joke to share with some of his disc jockey friends. It was later released in the early 70s (the pressing you see above) when there was a much more respectable market for X-Rated comedy, like Redd Foxx’s albums “You Gotta Wash Your Ass,” Richard Pryor’s “Craps,” Rudy Ray Moore’s “The Cockpit” and the like.

As much as I truly like Redd Foxx what I think makes this 45 interesting is that it is just a good doo-wop track that swaps in a swear word so it plays to my ears both ways, kinda funny but also a pleasant song. Best of both worlds!

Hope you enjoyed today’s sides (out of earshot of your boss or kids) and we’ll be back on Friday with an hour long podcast and next Wednesday with some more 45s!

Peace,
-George / Snack Attack
