Musical Episode #066 : I’m A Good Woman, an hour of female led 45s

Philly’s Jackie Lavant and The Fashions, some who later went on to be in The People’s Choice, are featured in today’s mix of female singers.

Hey all, happy to have you back here for another hour long mix of 45s. Today’s sides are all funky and soulful tracks by or with a female lead, some groups, solo artists and I think Cold Blood and The Fashions are the only “bands” in the mix though that’s always a weird distinction with lots of blurry lines between singers, producers, writers, arrangers, etc.

All these records tend toward the mid and uptempo side of things, some hard hitting soul, some funky sides and a few with a nice heavy groove. There are a few pairings of sides on here, a couple by Maxine Nightingale that are really nice, clean sides with great drums, funky wah and some breaks for good measure. I had here mega-hit “Right Back Where We Started From” stuck in my head for while and realized I hadn’t done much more digging of her stuff beyond the hits and no big surprise, it was great, so I’m happy to get to sneak those into this mix. The Merry Clayton sides are, no surprise, excellent, her Elvis cover and the Eugene McDaniels produced One More Ride are one of the many feathers in her cap.

Lots of other great sides on here and I hope you enjoy them all and find a little good energy in here amidst all the difficulty and turmoil surrounding us.

Peace,

-George / Snack Attack
